It runs on however much sunlight it's getting, so on a fully overcast day its output drops. But it works hardest in bright sun — which is also when your attic is hottest and needs ventilation most — so the timing works in your favor. Some models add a thermostat or small battery to extend running time.
A standard solar attic fan doesn't run after dark, but that's usually fine: attics don't build up heat at night the way they do under the afternoon sun. If round-the-clock ventilation matters for your situation, some solar units offer a battery or hybrid option, or an electric fan may be the better fit — we'll advise at the assessment.
