The good news is that it is possible to install a French drain without professional helpโbut it requires some preparation and expertise. Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials needed for the job; these include pea gravel, filter fabric, perforated pipe, gloves, shovels, buckets or wheelbarrows, measuring tape, and waterproofing sealant.
The Digging
Once you have all the tools you need, itโs time to start digging! Depending on where your French drain is located on your property, you may need to rent an auger or backhoe in order to dig deep enough into the ground. Your goal should be to create a trench at least 18 inches deep with at least 2-3 feet of width.
Final Installation
Next comes the installation of the actual drainpipe. Start by placing a layer of pea gravel at the bottom of your trench followed by filter fabric (this will keep out dirt particles). Then lay down your perforated pipe over the top of the gravel/fabric layer so that its holes are facing down towards the bottom of your trench (this is important!). Once that is done fill in any remaining spaces around the pipe with more pea gravel followed by another layer of filter fabric.
Make sure everything is sealed tight with a waterproof sealant so that no water can leak through any crevices or cracks. Finally, cover up the entire trench with soil or grass seed if desired. If installed properly this type of drainage system should last for years!
