It depends on thickness — the thicker the roll, the higher the R-value. As a rough guide, fiberglass hits about R-13 to R-15 for 2x4 walls, R-19 to R-21 for 2x6 walls, and R-30 to R-38 for attics. We calculate the right R-value for your space and climate and select the roll thickness to match.

Faced rolls have a built-in vapor retarder (kraft or foil) that's needed in some applications and faces the conditioned side; unfaced rolls are used in others or as an added layer over existing insulation. Using the correct type in the correct orientation matters for moisture control — which is part of doing it right.
Fiberglass is glass fiber, which is non-combustible and doesn't feed a fire, so it adds a measure of fire safety. If maximum fire and sound resistance is the priority, mineral (rock) wool is denser and performs better on both — see our rockwool and batt pages for that option.
