Can Squirrels Carry Diseases?

The short answer is yes, squirrels can carry diseases. However, because of their size and typically timid nature, it’s unlikely that they would be able to transmit any of these illnesses directly to humans. That being said, there have been cases in which people have contracted illnesses from squirrels indirectly—for example, by touching surfaces contaminated by an infected squirrel and then touching their face before washing their hands.

Another thing to consider is that while direct contact with a disease-carrying squirrel may be unlikely, exposure to fleas or ticks carried by the animals may be more common. In fact, several species of ticks are known carriers of Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, both of which can cause serious illness in humans if left untreated. Always use caution when coming into contact with wildlife or anything related to them!

Can Squirrels Attack People?

Again, the short answer here is yes—but only under certain circumstances. Generally speaking, squirrels will not attack unless they feel threatened or provoked in some way; however, if cornered or startled by loud noises or sudden movements, there is always a chance that a squirrel could try to defend itself by biting or scratching someone nearby. 

It is also worth noting that mother squirrels will fiercely protect their young if they deem someone a threat. Therefore it’s best not to approach too close to nests or baby animals unless you know what you’re doing!
