Step One: Locate Your French Drain

The first step in cleaning your French drain is locating where it is. These drains are typically located around the perimeter of your property near the foundation or under decks, patios, and sidewalks. Once you have located the drain, you should clearly see where it runs and what type of material it is made of (i.e., PVC).

Step Two: Clear Out Debris

Once you have found your French drain, it’s time to start removing any debris that may be blocking its flow. Depending on where your French drain is located, this could include leaves, dirt, twigs, stones, etc. You can use a shovel or rake to remove these items from around the area so they don’t clog up the drainpipe when you start washing away other materials later in this process. Be sure to also check for any animals that may have taken up residence inside the drainpipe!

Step Three: Use A Pressure Washer or Hose

The next step is to use either a pressure washer or garden hose with an adjustable nozzle to flush out any remaining debris that may be inside or around the pipe itself. If using a hose with an adjustable nozzle, make sure you adjust it appropriately so that you can apply enough pressure without damaging the pipe itself. The goal here is to clear out all of the debris so water can flow freely through your French drain once again!
