Many homeowners in winter-prone areas often wonder if a French drain will still work when the temperatures dip. The good news is that, yes, it does! A French drain or perimeter new drainage system works off the principle of passively drawing excess water away from the foundation walls and low-lying areas around a home. 

Most French drains are designed with perforated pipes laid in relatively flat trenches filled with gravel, stone, or other aggregate materials. In extremely cold climates, frost may occur as ice accumulates along the edges of the trench, but since most utilities are buried beneath standard depths they do not interfere with the proper functioning of this proper drainage system. 

Walking on a French drain is certainly possible, but it isn’t necessarily safe or recommended for everyone. A French drain is essentially an underground system of pipes that redirects water drainage away from buildings and foundations, so tender footing is a must!

Generally made of gravel and pipe, the uneven stones and terrain of the French drain can become precarious underfoot when not properly taken care of or tended to. To ensure safety while walking on a French drain, use caution and sturdy shoes with a good grip to avoid injury.
